Steve Masters
Competency Development Manager, CMMI Appraisal Team

Introduction:

The Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI SM ) is designed to provide benchmark quality ratings relative to Capability Maturity Model Ò Integration (CMMI Ò ) models. The role of the SCAMPI Lead Appraiser has developed into a distinct profession that encompasses a wide and deep array of competencies. The SLA BOK provides a multi-dimensional view of the competencies and associated skills required to be a successful SCAMPI Lead Appraiser. The SLA BOK is a driver for the SEI Appraisal Program's approach to ensure quality of SCAMPI appraisals. It establishes a comprehensive basis for curriculum, training, certification, observation, and quality assurance programs.   There is a natural interface to the SPIBOK as a key role of SCAMPI Lead Appraisers is to facilitate process improvement within organizations. Many of the competencies and associated skills required of a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser would be equally important to process improvement practitioners. In addition, the SLA BOK is organized by competency clusters and knowledge areas and the architecture provided was a very convenient way to document the many different knowledge, skills, and abilities that a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser should have. A similar architecture would seem to be very helpful in articulating the competencies required of a process improvement professional.
